CONSERVATION
The Ongava Game Reserve was founded in 1991, when shareholders of Ongava converted four unproductive cattle ranches into a highly productive 30,000-hectare/74,000 acre private game reserve that is now a haven for large concentrations of wildlife. The most successful reintroduction project on the Reserve is the white and black rhino project. Ongava holds one of the largest rhino custodianships for the Namibian government. These custodianships are set up in safe havens throughout the country in hopes of breeding rhino to more sustainable numbers, and reintroducing them into areas where they previously flourished.
ACTIVITIES
Activities at Little Ongava revolve around a range of safari adventures. All activities are tailored to ensure the best possible nature experience at one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations.
Day and night drives
To best view wildlife in the Ongava Reserve, drives are all in Land Rovers. There is also the possibility to enjoy game drives and daytrips into the easily accessible Okaukuejo area of Etosha National Park.
Walking safari
Tracking white rhinos on foot and walks in the wild are all accompanied by expert and highly experienced guides. For those who enjoy close wildlife encounters, tracking amazing creatures on foot with a guide is a highlight not to be missed.
WILDLIFE
The Ongava Game Reserve, which has a healthy population of predators, offers sightings of all wildlife characteristic to the area, especially the desert-adapted black and white rhino, plains game such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, waterbuck, red hartebeest, giraffe, eland and endemic black-faced impala. Etosha National Park has elephant to add to the list. Lion and leopard move between the Park and the Reserve. Birdlife on the Ongava Reserve is prolific with over 340 species having been sighted, among them 10 of Namibia’s 14 endemic bird species.
PHOTOGRAPHY
An additional feature is the hideout at the Camp’s waterhole which provides superb photographic opportunities. Little Ongava is also adjacent to the renowned Etosha National Park, best known for the dry and dusty images of the winter season, when large concentrations of game are drawn to the waterholes scattered around the fringe of the saltpan. The dusty atmosphere is magical. Another exciting season in Etosha and Ongava Game Reserve is the summer, mid-November to March. There is no better way to experience the summer season than seeing the dark clouds of an approaching summer thunderstorm, which contrasts with the bleached calcrete soils waiting to be replenished. For photographers this is a special time: breathtaking horizons, dramatic light and lightning displays, fresh clean air, and visibly more energetic game.
